Business Areas

Generation
With over 100 power stations (thermal and renewable), we have a total generating capacity of around 11000 MW – making us the leading generator of electricity from renewable sources and the second largest generator overall in the UK.

In Generation, an Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to learn about the technical disciplines that are so vital to our business. The programme usually lasts for around four years and will be based in our Renewable generation team which includes hydro electric power stations and our wind farms throughout the UK. Following the course opportunities may also arise in our thermal power stations in Ferrybridge, Yorkshire; Fiddler's Ferry, Cheshire; Keadby, Yorkshire; Medway, Kent and Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.

In Generation we have opportunities for Power Station Operations Apprenticeships.

Home Services
Our Home Services business was set up in 2006 and continues to expand with ambitious future growth plans. It provides a range of protection and maintenance services for our customers' gas boilers, central heating systems and electrical wiring and also a full range of gas and electrical installation services. Our two year Home Services apprenticeship is a Level 2 NVQ scheme. There are also opportunities for further development to NVQ Level 3 and beyond.

In Home Services we have opportunities for Gas Service and Gas Installation Apprenticeships.

Power Systems
With a network of 127,000km of underground cables and overhead lines stretching across a third of the UK's land area, we distribute electricity to over 3.5 million homes and businesses. It's our responsibility to ensure the communities we serve have a safe and reliable electricity supply, and that we do everything we can to restore power as soon as possible after any interruptions.

Apprentices in Power Systems go through a four-year programme learning the skills needed to repair and maintain the network that delivers electricity to homes and businesses in the south of England, the north of Scotland and the Northern and Western Isles.

Successful completion of the Apprenticeship could lead to you becoming a skilled craftsman in one of our three core trades:

  • Cable Jointer, you will be responsible for connecting new and repairing existing underground electricity cables
  • Fitter, where you would be responsible for maintaining plant and equipment
  • Linesman, constructing, building and maintaining overhead power lines

In Power Systems we have opportunities for Power Systems Craft Apprenticeships.
